Apple is certainly enjoying the current trend seen at AT&T and
Verizon, which show the majority of smartphone sales are going to Apple.
It is expected that the iPhone 5 will continue to keep this majority
trend, and this is only encouraged by the amount of people holding out
for the iPhone 5 release date. We’ve heard that around 80 million
people are ready to purchase the 6th generation phone at launch, and
add this to the slowdown in current iPhone sales it shows that a new
record is likely this year.
The second quarter of 2012 shows the majority of Verizon and AT&T
smartphone sales were iPhone, and this is according to the quarterly
financial results from both these companies. AT&T reported the
iPhone made up 73 percent (3.7m) of its smartphones sales, and Verizon
explained that 45 percent (2.7m) of its smartphone sales were Apple
phones. Both of the companies reported lower Apple sales than the previous quarter, but this happens every year and with an iPhone 5 incoming it had been expected again.
T-Mobile doesn’t currently stock the iPhone, although it might get
the iPhone 5, or 6, in 2013 and not at launch this year. Sprint sells
the iPhone and makes up around one-sixth of mobile phone sales in the
United States, although we don’t have their quarterly financial results
at the time of writing.
It is pretty amazing how much of the mobile market the iPhone owns,
and there is no other phone that comes anywhere near the number of sales
Apple attracts. This trend is expected to continue with the iPhone 5,
although there will be more competition with some amazing phones Samsung
are launching. It is Samsung’s aim to beat Apple with a massive range
of phones, rather than the limited options Apple provides with an
iPhone, although with that said you still have to admire how Apple rules
the market with one phone.
